Simone McPhail - Weekly Artist Post

Christian Coigny

This photographer chooses to shoot these moments on the beach in black in white, this choice lets the shadows shape the pictures. If Coigny had captured these moments in full color photos the colors might have overpowered and almost belittled the shadows. Another technical choice that is interesting, is the choice to shoot in the day time with sunlight. In the night time this space might not have been illuminated as well with moonlight or the light pollution caused by a neighboring city or a boardwalk, if there is one at this beach like area.

In this series of photos categorized as "Reportage" on his website, Christian Coigny uses black and white to capture what another artist might consider to be conveyed more vividly in full color. These images show fleeting moments that captured here are frozen in time. The photos don't seem to be set up in anyway but sort of a third person look on a great beach day shared by family and friends. It seems like you can see straight through the black and white and almost live in the moment with the subjects of the photo by filling in your own colors.

Im interested in the choice of white and black to show what is usually conveyed as a warm summer day with vibrant and vivid colors. These photographed moments are usually burned into our brains because of the bright colors we can't ignore. In these photos the image is still stuck in your memory but more because you can still feel the hot sun and the sand burning the children feet with out the traditional yellow sand in the lower third and the piercing blue and white in the other two top thirds. The moments are still real and still relatable but almost even more so when you can focus on whats really going on in the photo.
