Shane Rocheleau - Weekly Artist Post (EXAMPLE)

Alec Soth

1)  Alec Soth uses a large format 8x10 camera which allows for greater detail and fidelity.  Unlike a small format digital camera, an image can be enlarged to 50x60" without losing detail in the smallest elements.  He also seems to be aware of color contrasts and how those contrasts might evoke a certain interest in his viewer.

2)  In his series, NIAGRA, Soth appears to question our American mythology pertaining to romantic love.  While the myths portray lifelong spouses as a perfect model of sexual lust and obedience, Soth seems to suggest that love is a partnership, difficult work, filled with difficulty and joy alike.

3)  I appreciate Soth's take on the improper romantic ideals espoused by American media and its mythos.  Personally, it gives me a small solace that others recognize the difficulties of romance as opposed to simply espousing the unattainable ideals.
