Meaghan Mozingo - Artist post #11

Harvey Benge

1)Harvey Benge is a Photographer from New Zealand. He is currently traveling between Paris and New Zealand capturing the unusual or overlooked. Being self publishes his own photograph books.

2) Benge captures the human landscapes where nothing is as it seems. He creates photographic series that become books. The above pictures are from his books You Wont Be With me Tomorrow and Not Food Or Sex. You Wont Be With Me Tomorrow deals with separation, mistrust, and the pain of relationships. His book Not Food Or Sex is the first in a series of books. Benge captures the mundane in a beautiful way that makes the audience want to look and examine each subject.

3)The first set of pictures are from You won't be with me Tomorrow, The woman is well photographed covered in a veil. the black veil ties in to the stark black background. It also goes with Benge's theme of separation and pain. The lighting on her face and neck has a nice balance of warm and cool tones with very little shadows. The Picture on the next page, of the flowers,  compliments the women nicely. Woman are associated with flowers and relationships. The flowers also have warm and cool tones with limited shadowing and a dark background. this sets of pictures feels like a narrative and makes the audience want to look closer and know more about the subjects.
The second set of pictures, to me represents, new and old. The new growth of flowers and the old piano. These photos are form Not Food or Sex. The flowers have a nice shape traveling up the picture. the grey sidewalk continues this shape with a slight difference in greys. The colors of green and white stand out from the grey background. The Piano, I believe is beautifully photographed. the shadowing and highlights on the keys are well done and consistent. The broken keys are off centered adds to the oddity of it. The coloring of the piano and the highlights and shadows are very well balanced.
The final sets of photos are also from Not Food or Sex. Again a set of pictures that at first glance have no specific meaning or purpose, but the subjects are well photographed with a good amount of contrast which captures the viewers eyes. In the first picture, the bag really makes this photo. The bright red contrasts the greens, greys, and browns. The bag creates interest within this photo. In the second photo, the highlights are contrasted by deep shadows. It seems as though, Benge is careful about using his shadows. However in this photo the shadows are deeper which creates a nice and appealing contrast.
