Ron Jude

Ron Jude was born in Los Angeles and then raised in Idaho. He didn't really get into photography until his 20's when he saw a Mike Kelley exhibition in London. Now he teaches photography at Ithaca University in New York. A lot of his work is ink jet printed onto fiber paper and then mounted onto dibond, a lightweight aluminum alternative.
His subject matter seems to be mostly of rural areas, possibly around where he grew up in Idaho, or just places that remind him of home. He said in an interview that while he doesn't necessarily go looking to take photos filled with sentimentality, he does "want to walk right up to the edge of it and have a good look". He thinks it's worth our consideration. He has done photography in urban settings, but the majority of his work looks to be in deserts or mountains.
I am drawn to Ron Jude's work because every photo seems to have a sense of weight to it. Even though many of them seem to be filled with simple objects with simple colors, I think those two concepts play well with each other. I really enjoy his lighting decisions, especially what he chooses to do with his exposure, some of his most recent photos seem a little over exposed, and it works well with his subject matter.
