Clarissa Stanley - Weekly post 4

Michelle Siu

1. Michelle Siu's taboo portraits of young children smoking cigarettes are natural and raw. Shot with a DSLR, the first has high contrast with the subject and the background in full focus. In the second the camera appears to be mounted on the table or as if the photographer is in a chair across from the subjects. The last seems to be darker than the others with a blurred background.

2. The photojournalist is trying to bring attention to the young smokers living in Indonesia and the corruption in government that is associated with the smoking manufacturers. By allowing the viewer to be focused in on the face of the child and their humble surroundings, the viewer connects with the child on an emotional level.

3. It is amazing to see how other children in the world live, in america this would be odd and outrageous to see but in Indonesia it is the most normal thing in the world. These photos are raw and provocative to most people and that is why they should be shot and shared.
