Mayteana Colon weekly post 6

Nan Goldin

1) With the use of snapshot like images Nan takes up close pictures of the hard/street life of Urban areas. Her motif is usually sex, violence and drugs. She tends to use available light and her subjects are usually a few feet if not inches from the camera.

2) In the first image a couple is depicted, one of of the partners seem to be unsatisfied or depressed while the partner sitting in the chair in the background seems depressed. The light is bright and makes the image look almost like a still life or even a painting. The second image is of a women posing naked in what appears to be a studio. The flash may have been involved in the making of this image. The subject seems to almost mirror the pictures in the background with that same model like, perfect feel to it. In the last image it appears that a women has been beaten and has a black eye. The flash seems to be on and the subject is close to the camera.

3) I chose these images because I like photographs that depicts real life situations and real life human form. I particularly like the last image of the women with a black eye because it not only depicts a real life situation but also sheds light on domestic violence which is an issue in our country.
