Natalie Longus - Weekly Artist Post 1

   1. Geert Goiris in two pictures (from his book Lying Awake) uses black in white, while in the third, color is present. The thing that links them all together is the strong contrast of light and dark. This may be used to evoke the dualities of the wake and dream state or conscious and unconscious. He also uses isolation of form that brings a sense of lonesomeness, seclusion and despair but also the notion of wonder and questioning.
  2.  These three photos seem to have to do with fear. The artist titled this book Lying Awake, yet the photos seem dream like. So perhaps while we are lying awake our subconscious (filled with our fears) prevents us from sleeping. All three pictures give off an overall feeling of being trapped, but we are only trapped by the things that we ultimately create mentally.
  3.   I am compelled the way I’m compelled to Geert Goiris’s intents because these three pictures some way or another immediately gave off an anxiety filled feeling. I was also compelled by the brightness he could capture in each photo even in photos that at the same time were seemingly in the dark. This was the perfect representation of reality, dreams, fear, and anywhere in between.
