Parker Austin Artist Post #4

Dorothea Lange

1) Dorothea was a photographer in the late 30s-50s. All of these photos being based out of San Francisco. They are all in black in white due to the time and they are all of multiple people. It seems that she was at a gathering on the streets of some sort. She uses 3/14 X 4 1/4 and 4 x 5 inch Graflex Super D, stand about 10 feet away from the center of each image.

2) Though it doesn't say what exactly is going on in the pictures at the time but it almost seems like a panic or a troublesome situation. With people laying on the ground and a few people look distressed. But there are a few people in the middle picture that are smiling and that make be them trying to make light of the situation. I feel like the emotion she way trying to capture was mostly in these pictures out of all the ones she has. There is more emotion in the faces of these people.

3) When I see these pictures they make me think of hard times or and make me anxious. Im not good with big crowds of people so if i were in the second picture i would turn into the first one in an instant. The second picture has so much going on in it, its hard to find a focal point everyone has a different expression, but there are so many hats. The third one gives me a feeling of melancholy for the old man. im not sure why but he just seems like he needs help with something.
