Dawit Samson - Weekly Artist Post 6

Daniel Shea

1.) Daniel Shea, a 25 year old photographer, captures portraits in a different way. He uses light techniques, like a back light, and a filler (not sure if its the right type of light) to lighten parts of the subjects' face. He also uses a shallow depth of field, and in the first one he has his shutter speed at a low speed.

2.) His intentions for these portraits is to show the subject, but not fully. Just like in real life, people show of their good side and hide there bad side. The three photos above are shot different and have way different meanings depending on the subject. In the first one, if I am not mistaken it is Meek Mill, a young, well-known rapper, and in his portrait Shea uses a slow shutter speed to show how fast Mill's life is going. For Obama's portrait Shea has a light above Obama's head which resembles a stage light, a metaphor for his life.

3.) Shea's choice of lighting, depth of field, and shutter speed is well done. He uses each variables of photography to tell a story through a portrait. His use of a dark background is great as well, since again its a portrait, no need to show anything else.
