Parker Austin Weekly Artist Post 6

Brassaï

1) Brassaï was a Hungarian photographer in the early 1900's but was also a sculptor. These photos are part of a gallery labeled 'Graffiti'. Though its not paint its carvings into walls.  Brassaï used a large, fixed lens, 6.5x9 cm Voigtländer Bergheil folding camera mounted on a heavy wooden tripod. All of these photos are taken from a few inches from the wall and seem to be carved into the same material.
2) As you can see the shape of a heart is used in 2 of these photos, maybe to cause a love or lost love symbolism. On the bottom picture it is not explained what the S stands for but it also doesn't say if its an S at all for all we know it could be a miscellaneous squiggle. The middle picture have as much feeling in it as the bottom because its predominately a shape.
3) I think for me, the top picture gave me chills. its seem like something you would see carved into a rock or a tree on a deserted island. It gives me an odd feeling that i'm not actually alone when i think i am. Almost like something from The Green Inferno. The bottom though, it is heart shaped makes me feel sad. the face doesn't look happy even though its a heart. maybe the body is also a heart and the S is a crack. I do like his work and i am looking at a lot of his galleries online.
