Logan Willis - Weekly Artist Post #5

Renée C. Byer

1) Renée C. Byer is an awarding winning photographer. She really captured emotions throughout these specific pieces of her work and that interested me most. The pieces of work above were featured in a magazine in California called The Sacramento Bee. The photos above feature Cyndie French and her son, Derek Madsen, who was battling cancer from 2004 until 2006. Renée chose to use more shallow depths of field in some photos rather than others. For example, most of the close-up shots have a more shallow depth of field whereas some of the other photos are close-ups but still have a deeper depth of field such as the confetti string photograph.

2) Renée clearly stuck to a black and white photo theme. This could have been done purposely to imply that cancer isn't something that is just black and white as most things aren't and there are those gray areas. I really like how she captured the emotions throughout the pictures, especially of Cyndie. While I can sympathize with the emotions that are being displayed in the photos, I feel that Renée did a good job of spacing out the photographs and including the good moments and the bad despite Derek's situation.

3) Personally, these pieces of work completely moved me. The black and white photographs helped set a tone from the start but the real life situation being captured is really what moved me. However, I really enjoyed going through so many emotions while looking through these works specifically. Personally, I went from smiling to crying to smiling again to crying to being at peace and feeling a sense of calmness while looking through these works. I had huge respect for both Renée, Cyndie, and Derek as these photos were only more intense as they were being created.
