'Wisconsin Death Trip Excerpts'
1890-1910

Charles Van Schaick makes many different technical choices when creating theses images. Throughout the entirety of his work, Schaick sets up each of his images in a different way but all capturing a specific object; in many instances people. Schaick does seems to set up all of his photographs, this is more than likely because of the type of camera that he is using. But because of this none of his pictures are very candid, many of his subjects are very cold face with next to no expressions.
Schaick seems to be trying to capture the essence of morbidity in all of his photos. Many of his images are of the dead or people who seem to have no life in them. Schaick's portraits are generally full body showing off every detail of the subject.
I do not really connect with this style of photography, I think it lacks life and excitement. However I do find it interesting to see the way people portray themselves in front of a camera. All in all I do think Schaick does a good job in framing his subjects and setting up portraits in a way that is more interesting than your typical style.
