Landscape and Portrait 1- Darsey Renz

Alec Soth

Although this could technically also be considered a portrait, I believe the landscape is the main focus. Soth chose to take this photograph at a particular time of day, either at sunrise or sunset. This decision was crucial because if it had been the middle of the day, he wouldn't have gotten all of the colors from the sky for his background. It also allowed for the subject (s) to be perfectly outlined and clear. In this frame, Soth cut the two rocks on each side at about halfway, giving a nice frame to the center subjects. Things are overlapping, but not to the point where you miss anything. And his decision to place a person to the right in a cage, maybe, with a yellow shirt adds interest to the composition.

The color contrast here is fantastic. The reds and oranges in the leaves match the red and oranges in the subject's beard. There are also some reds, oranges, and yellows in the moss as well that compliment the leaves and his beard. The green moss on the rock contrasts nicely with the colors in the leaves and his hair/beard. That green makes his hair color more intense. The blue in his jumpsuit also adds interesting color contrast to both the reds, oranges, and green. The stick on the left and the log on the top are creating a frame for the subject.
