In the portrait of the two people hugging, Alec Soth made a few decisions so that he could make the picture. He may have seen the two people in public or may know them and asked them to hug each other. He wanted what looks like the woman in the photo to be looking at the camera and to be hugging the man a certain way. Capturing the full width of their bodies yet not centering them in the picture makes the photo more appealing to the viewer.
The photo of the JC Penny parking lot is an interesting look at a landscape. Soth would have to have gone to this parking lot a little after it had already snowed and when people had made their marks with their cars in the parking lot. He also may have chosen to go around the morning later because the sky still appears a bit dark and their are only a few cars in the lot.
