Holli Turner - Weekly Artist Post (Midweek)

Bruce Wrighton

For the landscape I enjoy the vintage look of this photograph.  Its not necessarily the look of the photograph but what the items in the photographs looks like.  There is a great use of light and color in this photograph, the gradient blue of the sky the yellows, browns and whites that show up all over the picture plane.  The decision that the photographer made outside of the camera stop when he got to the Tidy Up trash dispenser so that he could lead the eye from the right to the left where the yellow brick upwards to the Pepsi sign with the yellow borders.  He chooses to frame in the 3 windows on the right, which goes with the 2 columns of 3 windows on the brown building in the back.

For the portrait the artist does an excellent job with cropping objects into the workspace.  Nothing in the image seems haphazardly thrown in.  There is also an excellent balance that takes place and the image appears to be equally weighted, not too heavy on either side.  He balances the objects on the left with the subject and tollbooth on the right.
