Joshua Caudell Weekly post 9

In these photographs Alicia Rius has made portraits of different Types of animals.  She uses natural light against the black background to create stark contrast, almost reminiscent of a Caravaggio painting.  In other areas, Natural backgrounds were also used to represent a different.  The pictures also look very resolute, which suggests that she used a low, high-quality ISO.  The cats also appear to be in the act (of moving) which would also indicate a quick shutter speed.

In the pictures, Rius looks to capture the true essence of these animals providing images intent on displaying their paradoxical nature, that is, the beauty within their "peculiarity." She looks to have chosen her portraits with careful precision to depict the unusual body language, as well as the various details of their skin.

While I agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I, also see the beauty in the peculiarity of these particular cats.  I think that these photographs do a great job of helping to make that argument as well, not only by emphasizing their loosely fitting skin, but by portraying them in such a manner as to capture their unfiltered expressiveness.
