Cory Hogan - Artist Post #7

Ferry Verheij

1.) Ferry Verheij is a Netherlands based photographer who set out to make pictures at the remains of what was the Grande Hotel in Beira, Mozambique. Verheij made both horizontally cropped photos and vertically arranged photos. The photos seem to be made indoors at a lower light condition.

2.) For these photos Verheij wanted to capture the impoverished people that now inhabit the remains of what was an extravagant hotel. This opened his eyes to how some people in the world live. He said that it's most definitely not a safe place to live and that the beauty of his photos should not undermine how saddening it is that these people are forced to live in such poor conditions.

3.) These photos look amazing to me. The lighting in each picture is so perfect and also impressive since it is in a building with zero electricity. The portraits seem to really capture so much emotion in the subjects faces. The third photo has this way of dragging your eye from right to left because of the child on the left and the large opening of light on the right.
