Jennifer Livingston - Artist Post 4

AdamBartos

1) In Adam Bartos photos taken in Los Angeles during the years 1978 – 79, he took photos of cars and places that he was drawn to. He used a 5x7 camera. He took the photos in an attempt to find himself after moving to Los Angeles.

2) The top photo above is my favorite. The blue car stands out, but not so much whereas that’s all the eye looks at. In a sense, the photo does have a sense that time has moved from using the old car, to being able to build the city in the background. In the second photo, there is a love hate relationship. The ocean in the background with the apartment complex, cracked road, and vehicle in the front. The apartment, road, and car just seem to be in the way, as if the development of civilization meant the obstruction of the landscape. The last photo of the street near dusk is an interesting photo. There’s even a railroad that crosses the intersection.

3)  All of the pictures above were taken as he spent much of his time driving around the city. Although, the photos include cars, there may be an underlying message of how civilization has developed and the destruction of environmental landscapes. To an extent everyone is a slave to their vehicles. In his photos he attempts to incorporate a sense of time.
