Julius Ayo Post 3 Artist 1

Ryota Kikuchi

1. Ryota Kikuchi is a photographer who sidelines as freeclimber during the day. The pictures above are from his project titled Born. His pictures are made on portrait format. Kikuchi likes to disobey the rule of thirds and usually photographs his subject, in this case himself, at the center of the frames. Kikuchi likes to play with contrast in the backgrounds. His pictures have this dual type of contrast in color that frames the subject in the center. Most of his pictures, although the subject is on top of architectures and objects, are always taken from the ground with the perspective onlooker in mind as if just casually passing by.

2. For this project,  Kikuchi climbed on top of lamp posts. Most of them are during the day, some were taken during what look like sunset to show off some contrast in color for the background. For most of them, Kikuchi would lay on the top of the lamp post with his limbs hanging in a relaxed position. Some pictures were taken from behind and some in profile shots. All of them show his ability to climb as well as the heights of these posts.

3. Honestly, I can't help but psychoanalyze these pictures when I look at them. The lamp posts look like vaginas with the lights as the ovaries, the bridges as fallopian tubes, and the of course the body as the uterus. Kikuchi is seen trying to climb the vagina looking lamp posts maybe to overcome his masculinity, perhaps.
