Olga Morozova - Artist post # 3

1) Helmut Newton is considered as one of the most important photographers of XX century. Mostly photographing famous people he created his own style, glamorous, seductive and somehow mysterious. Newton’s nude imagery brought taboo subject matter, such as sado-masochism and fetishism, into mainstream fashion photography for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Playboy and Elle magazines in the 1950s and 60s. However soon he turned away from fashion photography towards personal projects.

2) In one of her films French actress Catherine Deneuve speaks of Newton’s photographs: “Helmet’s photos always expose something but remain mysterious at the same time… that’s why women love them so much”. It seems that Newton always knew what he wanted from a model, producing impressive, strong, sometimes shocking image of women.

3) I enjoyed going through the pictures of this artist. I recognized many images that I had seen before but didn’t know the name of the photographer. His imagery is not conventional; he doesn’t have limits when it comes to a photographic style. He doesn’t restrict himself to just erotic or sexual pictures because they sell; I see something more than that – an improvisation, playfulness, power and attractive weirdness in his work.
