Olga Morozova - Artist Post # 6

1)      The artist that I have chosen for this post is an American photojournalist in Afghanistan, Paula Bronstein. She first time traveled to Afghanistan in 2001 and she keeps coming back to capture the daily life of its people. In 2016 she published a book “Afghanistan: Between Hope and Fear” that contains over a hundred images that give us an insight into a different world, a world of war, suffering, but also a world of happiness.

      2)      According to Bronstein, Afghanistan is a country where sadness is a way of life. In her work she shows a dark side of this country: attempted suicides, girls’ forced marriage and domestic violence. She highlights that even nowadays many women are still struggling in order to defend their right. Bronstein reveals the daily lives of people in times of war going to the refugee camps, hospitals and military training centers and trying to expose the uncomfortable truth of Afghanistan. She says: “I keep going back motivated and inspired by those faces, pushing against the difficulties, hoping to find fewer doors slamming shut and more people seeing reasons to smile.

     3)      If you go to Bronstein website (http://www.paulaphoto.com/ ) you will find out such a powerful images. They can be quite disturbing, but will make you enter a different world and realize how lucky you are living in a safe country and having so many benefits. Her example is impressive because being a female photographer in such country is very dangerous. However the artist continues coming back and photographs the horror of the daily life of this country so she could bring awareness about its problems.  It takes courage and lots of empathy to do this kind of job plus the images itself are very good and make you think about not only the world around , but actually reflect on your own life as well.
