Sarah Ipson- Artist post 6

Chuck Close

1.  Chuck Close  does system- driven pattern based contemporary art. Is also a photographer and personally takes the photos (mainly headshots) of those who he makes the art work for. Chuck Close uses a series of mixed colors which he places in to a grid of squares and in the grid of squares there are layers of circles, ovals, or squares each layer consisting of a different color. These colors react with the eye from a distance and the grid of squares and layers soon embodies the photo that Close took of the given subject.

2. Chuck Close's intent was to show that you can use a grid and hundreds of shapes to simulate something that it is not there, and with a variety of colors (it is different with every picture) that the eye will manipulate it and see the image he is trying to create.

3. The feeling I get when looking at this is an awestruck feeling. I can not seem to wrap my mind around how someone was able to figure out this pattern-based art. For him to have a mind like this it makes me wonder what goes on inside his mind. It is simply mind boggling that a grid composing of around one-thousand blocks, containing different shapes ranging from circles, to ovals, and squares each having set layers  of different colors and shades could make portraits of people. It's stunning how the mind and eyes manage to manipulate the light reflecting from the colors to bend the curves and have human images appear out of it.
