Jennifer Livingston - Artist Post 6

1) Tod Hido’s photos above are from the series ‘House Hunting’. He gets his inspiration from his past. He has been using the same camera, a Pentax 6 x 7 medium film for twenty years. Each of the photos in House Hunting were taken with long exposure times; some of them being four minutes or longer.

2) Hido will sometimes drive for four or five hours at a time looking for a house to photograph. He’s drawn to the cinematic theme that something is about to happen. That’s comes out in all of his photos above. They each have an eerie, surreal feel to them.

3) His technique, and series House Hunting has inspired other photographers to get out there and try something new. As Hido takes the photo of a house, he will start to ask himself questions about who lives there, if anyone, and what sort of narrative the house might tell. To me, each of his photos have a surreal effect, and do seem to have a cinematic feel to them.
