Hannah Zach - Artist Post 4

1) Genesis is the third long-term series on global issues by Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado. The exhibition is made up of over 200 black and white photographs varying from portraits to landscapes and everything in between.

2) Salgado intention was to capture the world, seen and unseen, and how we as a race have evolved.  "It is a testimony that our planet still harbors vast and remote regions where nature reigns in silent pristine majesty." The photographer traveled across the globe to document arctic, desert, and tropical landscapes, wildlife and communities still living according to ancestral traditions. He photographed areas that western civilization had not changed or destroyed.

3) These pictures caught my attention because they seemed to have come from a world that i do not know. They made me feel small, helpless, unknown, and out of place. How could these photos represent the same world that we live in? I have become so accustomed to western civilization that beautiful photos like these by Salgado seem alien.
