darian volkova

Darian Volkova is a ballet photographer who is a ballerina herself. She has been dancing since the age of 3. She is currently freelancing dance-wise, mainly joining touring companies. Volkova's start into photography was watching her photographer husband at work and decided to try it.

There are no details about her camera/ setup. Volkova has made pictures about the several aspects of a dancers life: the rehearsal, the quiet moments back stage, the ritual of lacing on pointe shoes, and idealistic dance photo op. Her lighting choices reflect her environment, dramatic with a tendency to backlighting. She has formal shoots and candid shots, even selfies.

Aside from her pictures being really pretty, I think Volkova's work is very interesting. A lot of photographers I'm drawn to are ones that go outside of the realm of the familiar and try to assimilate into a completely different world. She makes pictures of things she sees everyday. We might see an impossible image of a woman with her leg extended to her ear but, Volkova and her peers see the woman relaxation in her metatersal and how sunk she is in her box. I really like the first picture, I feel like people are so used to see big exciting extensions. This shows the build, the time taken for proper technique.
