Darsey Renz- Weekly Artist Post

Larry Clark

What are the artist's technical choices?

Larry Clark mostly captures unsettling scenes using different lighting, people, and locations. He is unafraid to get down and dirty with the alive and dwelling issues amongst humans. Each photograph is high in contrast. Clark uses dark hair, shadows, or garments to create this in his compositions.

What are the artist's conceptual and/or thematic intents?

The focus in Clark's work is almost always on the very thing or person that is the leading issue (i.e. drugs, cigarettes, bullet holes, bruises). Most of the models are not smiling, and have a somber look on their face. This immediately creates a story for the viewer and stirs up a number of emotions. For instance, how do you think Clark wanted us to feel when we saw a man smoking a cigarette while holding his baby? Or when we saw the girl that got beaten? They make us ask questions about who, why, and what. The issues that he captures hit close to home and can easily make the viewer feel sad and/or angry.

How do you respond to these choices and intents?

Clark's braveness and grit shows in his photographs. If they were not so controversial, they would not be nearly as successful. I enjoy it when an artist is unafraid to create and/or reveal something; especially when it is a living, breathing issue in every day life.
