Weekly Artist Post - Matt Thyssen

Patrick Kauffman

1) In this series, Patrick Kauffman's technical decisions are essentially the use of color. He pops vibrant yellow against a deep black and cold gray.  He uses orange and yellow, and their proximity on the color wheel, to create vibrations. He also lays a deep blue over a cool, light blue that form an interesting compliment.

2) There's not much of a story to these photos, not that I can find, anyway, but his intent is to scrap all of that to capture the essence of color.  These are not pictures of physical objects, but the light that they reflect and the color we perceive.

3) I respond very well to these photos. The decision to abandon a physical subject in order to focus on color is not something that you see every day. People often don't slow down and perceive color as light, or see it what it really is.  We take it for granted, because we see it all the time, but the way the Artist pushes the color in these photos really makes the viewer stop and see how beautiful color really is.  I also think this is a good example of what to attempt for our present project.
