Chevon McClenney- Weekly Artist Post 5

Patrick Kauffman

Self employed for over 15 years, Danish photographer Patrick Kauffman, submitted to his fascination for 70s design when he began his Berlin Underground project. Focusing on the architectural structure and the brightly colored "U-Bahn" stations of Berlin, Kauffman worked predominantly at night to capture all 173 terminals without the obstruction of people. The designs of the stations of Berlin's U-Bahn range from Art Nouveau to 1970s Futurism.

When looking at the entirety of the Berlin Underground series, it seems as though he mainly used ambient light, but I wonder if all 173 stations were so well lit or if he had to bring in some of his own lighting. Some images look as if he used a wide angle lens, which would be helpful to get the whole scene into frame. The way in which Kauffman composes his frames highlights the architectural details and unique elements at each stop.

I really enjoy the series as Kauffman makes structural designs into almost abstract art. I would especially like the bright colors and that all of the stations are completely different from one another. I have officially added Berlin's U-Bahn to my buck list. Kauffman's Berlin Underground series which focuses on color and shape, reminds me of our current project dealing with solely on color and light. I'd like to borrow this idea and do a few series similar to this one.
