Christopher Wool

1). Christopher Wool's series, East Broadway Breakdown, was largely focused on black and white photos taken at night in the streets between Lower East Side and Chinatown. The quality of these photos looks fine, until you zoom in. It is not crisp and clear, it's blurry and there is plenty of noise going on. In these three photos, Christopher seems to be focusing on one object in the whole photo, instead of there being many things all at once. There seems to be a main source of light coming from the direction of the photographer. This source of light is most likely a flash light being held, to emphasize the object, or part of the object.

2). From looking at the rest of the East Broadway Breakdown series, I noticed that most of his photos were taking, what seems to be, after a riot. The reason for this is because in almost every photo, there is something that is dismembered and broken. It appears as if it was done purposefully, the dismemberment. The fire hydrant busted, with water leaking, doesn't typically happen on it's own. The car, which happens to be a NYPD police car, is falling apart and appears as if the trunk of the car was once on fire.

3). These pictures can give one a feeling of anxiety. Everything in these photos are beat up, and torn apart. No one cares about these objects. The fact that Christopher took away the color, he deliberately chose to make you only notice the one object, nothing else. Also, the light from the flashlight focusing one the main subject doesn't allow you to look somewhere else in the picture.
