Grace Herion - weekly artist post

Joanna Piotrowska

Joanna Piotrowska uses black and white images, maybe slightly overexposed but I am unsure of this. The images appear flat, suggesting she uses a long lens. She poses her subjects, they are not candid.

Piotrowska uses posed subjects to express a sort of "unresolved tension." Like many artists, her subjects involve sexuality and gender. Her photos aim to make the viewer think about motives and actions. Perhaps to look at the individuals and wonder what they are doing, why, and what they will do next?

I appreciate what Piotrowska is trying to evoke from the audience. I look at her pictures and wonder what the people are doing, and what they want the other people in the photo to do. Even though they are posed, you know there is a reason. Especially since they are posed, you know there is a purpose for their position and expression and you want to know what it is.
