Kiliii Yuyan
Being part Nanai (Siberian native) and Chinese, he looks to his roots for inspiration. He is fascinated by the connection between people and their natural environment. His ongoing quest : "can a modern person learn to see the world through native eyes?”
This specific project is called Living Wild, was a month spent with the Stone Age Living Project, a group of 21st century hunter-gatherers, lead by Lynx Vilden, whose goal is to live by Paleolithic methods outside of the modern world.
He fully immerses himself with culture and environment. Yuyan not only gets to know each culture's history but also the existing everyday details of their lives now. He makes pictures of the subjects in their environment but also formal portraits maybe to make it easier for 1st world audiences to relate. He is inspired by Edward S. Curtis, Aaron Huey, and Erika Larsen.
I like how he's about just trying to make a bridge/connection between cultures who are extremely different. Most of the indigenous cultures really rely on the land for sustenance, which includes killing wildlife, which is a issue here in our society but necessary in theirs.
Also he pays attention to his natural light and also uses strobes to accentuate it when necessary.
