Maria Goodrick Artist Post 1
1. Wolfgang Tillmans is a German photographer born in 1968. The images above are all chromogenic prints, but Tillmans tends to forgo typical darkroom practices when creating his pictures to get more unique results. He also considers his work incomplete without the design of the installation used to display his photographs. He has been known to include magazine clippings of his images along side color photographs and inkjet prints.
2. A large portion of Tillmans' work is photographs of people, usually people who are close to him. He has said that he photographs "people that I love in some way, people that I want to embrace." However, he also includes many still life and landscape images.
3. What struck me most about Tillmans' work is the intimacy of it. I could tell immediately that he took the time to carefully document either the person and what they are, or some private moment the person was involved with in a way that feels genuine. While he does stage many of his photos, it is difficult to tell because they all look sincere and candid. I was also surprised to find that his landscape and still life work has that same intimate sense to them.
